Escondido Center Renovation

Have you noticed? The Escondido Center Tower stands no more.  The tower was torn down on Dec. 8, as part of an overall renovation of the Escondido Center.  A new tower, as shown in the drawing below, will be constructed by March, 2013. Demolition of the front exterior is continuing and is also expected to be completed by March.  The Admissions office is now located in EC-10, across from the TLC.  Students and staff are encouraged to use the side entrance next to the TLC.

Create Citations Easily with EasyBib



 

Create and manage citations with EasyBib, available on the library’s home page.  With EasyBib you can create citations in MLA, APA or Chicago style.  In many cases, if EasyBib recognizes the title or web address for a source, it can automatically create a citation for you.  You can save and manage citations for multiple projects by registering with EasyBib or logging on with your Facebook, Google, Yahoo, AOL or OpenID accounts.  For tips on using EasyBib, see Palomar Library’s  EasyBib LibGuide. EasyBib also has a mobile app for your iPhone or iPad or for your Android device.

American History Databases

Have a history paper to write? Or maybe you’re just a history buff. Check out the library’s history databases, available through the library’s web site. Click on Articles and then the Arts & Humanities tab. From off campus log on with your student ID and eServices password. Staff log on with their email username and password.

• America: History and Life Full-Text
  This database covers the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present, with selective indexing for 1,700 journals from 1955 to present and full-text coverage of more than 200 journals and nearly 100 books.
• Sources in U.S. History: American Revolution
  This resource contains digital copies of primary source documents — personal accounts, pamphlets, monographs, congresses, speeches, maps — produced during the period covering the American Revolutionary War, from 1763 to 1783.
• Sources in U.S. History: The Civil WarThis collection of over 500 digitized primary-source documents spans the length of the Civil War and includes personal narratives and memoirs, pamphlets and political speeches, sermons and songs, regimental histories and photograph albums, legal treatises and children's books.  It covers battles, politics, religion, the experiences of leaders and common soldiers, the home front, causes, and consequences. It also covers special areas of study, including Southern history, African American history, medical history, history of technology and more.
• European Views of the Americas 1493 to 1750
  This database is an index of European works that relate to the Americas. Created from the authoritative reference source “European Americana: A Chronological Guide to Works Printed in Europe Relating to The Americas, 1493-1750,” this database contains more than 32,000 entries and is a comprehensive guide to printed records about the Americas written in Europe before 1750.

Are You a Fashionista?

Or maybe you need to research fashion, dress or cultures from around the world.  The library has two fashion databases – FashionSnoops and the Berg Fashion Library.    

FashionSnoops shows the latest styles and trends from leading designers in Paris, London, Tokyo, the US and other fashion centers.  FashionSnoops is a leading global forecaster of fashion trends.  

The BergFashion Library database is excellent for researching history and current fashions from around the world.  It offers nearly 70 full-text eBooks, including the ten-volume Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion.  Full of color images and authoritative articles, this database will be useful to anyone studying fashion, anthropology, art history, history, museum studies, and cultural studies. 

To access these, click on Articles on the library's home page, then click on the Arts & Humanities tab.  From off campus, log on with your student ID number and eServices password.

New Content in Intelecom

Intelecom, a digital repository of educational clips, just got better by adding an additional 350 clips from National Geographic to its collection. These educational clips are great for instructors and students. Faculty can use them in the classroom or embed them in Blackboard. Students can benefit by using them as additional tutorial support.

New clips are available in the following disciplines: Anthropology, Astronomy, Atmospheric Sciences, Botany, Chemistry, Earth Science, Geography, Oceanography, and Zoology.

Students and faculty can access Intelecom from the Palomar College Library website. Click on Articles. For remote access, a Palomar College login is required. If you have additional questions, please contact Tamara Weintraub, Databases and Serials Librarian.

Ebsco Database Research on Mobile Devices

EBSCO databases now autodetect when a user is on a mobile device. There is no need to switch interfaces manually any longer. This change makes searching from your phone one step easier. If you have never tried library research from your phone, perhaps now is the time to attempt it. From a WIFI connected mobile device, go to the Palomar College Library website, and click the Articles tab. Select any database with EBSCO in parentheses to enjoy the autodetect mobile device feature. Palomar College e-services id and password are required for remote access.
